The Legal WordPress Theme itself is GPL-licensed and free to use, modify, and redistribute. Its companion plugin, Legal Pro, is what carries the premium features — editorial skins, the demo importer, light/dark mode, the WOW Effects pack, and so on. This article covers the Pro license: what it includes, how to activate it, and how updates flow.
What’s included in a Legal Pro license
One purchase covers all of the following, on unlimited sites you own:
- All eight current Pro features (Premium Skins, Demo Importer, Light/Dark Mode, Dual Logo, Font Pairings, Mega-Menu, Schema.org Pro, WOW Effects)
- Every Pro feature added in future releases for as long as the license is active
- Auto-updates — when we ship a new version of Legal Pro, your site sees it under Plugins the same way it sees core WordPress updates
- Priority email support — replies within eight business hours, usually faster
The license is sold as a one-time payment with lifetime updates. There’s no recurring subscription, no per-site limit, and no feature gating beyond “is the license active.”
Activating your license
- After you complete checkout, you’ll receive an email containing your license key. The key is a long alphanumeric string — keep this email somewhere you can find it again.
- Install and activate the Legal Pro plugin from Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Go to Appearance → Legal Pro License.
- Paste your key into the License Key field.
- Click Activate License.
The plugin makes a request to fasterthemes.com to verify the key. If it succeeds, the page reloads showing the license as Active, and you’ll see the eight Pro features marked with check marks at the bottom of the page.
If activation fails, the most common causes are:
- The key has whitespace — copying from email sometimes adds a leading or trailing space. Re-paste the key, making sure there’s no whitespace.
- Your server can’t reach fasterthemes.com — some firewalls block outbound HTTPS to specific domains. Ask your host to whitelist
fasterthemes.com. - The key was activated on too many sites — although the license allows unlimited sites, the activation system tracks site URLs. If you’ve moved a site (e.g., from
staging.example.comtoexample.com), deactivate the license on the old URL first.
Where to find your license key later
Two places:
- Your purchase confirmation email from FasterThemes
- Your account dashboard at fasterthemes.com — log in with the email you used at checkout, and your active licenses are listed under your profile
If you’ve lost both, contact support@fasterthemes.com with the email address you used at purchase. We’ll resend the key.
How automatic updates work
When your license is active, the Legal Pro plugin checks for updates daily. Specifically:
- WordPress’s regular plugin update check (every 12 hours by default) makes a request to
fasterthemes.comfor the latest Legal Pro version number - If the server reports a newer version than what you have installed, an update notice appears next to Legal Pro on the Plugins page
- Click Update Now and WordPress downloads the new version, replaces the old one, and reactivates the plugin in place
Settings, license activation, and your site’s customizer values are all preserved across updates. The only files replaced are the plugin’s own files in wp-content/plugins/legal-pro/.
What happens when a license expires
Lifetime licenses don’t expire — but it’s worth knowing what would happen if a license were deactivated for any reason (you cancelled, refunded, or transferred ownership):
- The Pro plugin keeps running. Your site doesn’t break.
- The Pro features stop applying on the frontend. You’ll see the bare theme instead of the active skin, font pairing, etc.
- Your settings are preserved. If the license is reactivated, the features come back exactly as you had them.
- Auto-updates stop. You can still update the plugin manually by uploading a new zip if you re-acquire access.
This is by design — we never want to leave a customer’s site in a broken state because of a license issue.
Transferring a license to a new site
If you’re moving a site from one URL to another (e.g., development to production):
- On the old site, go to Appearance → Legal Pro License and click Deactivate License. This frees up the activation slot.
- On the new site, install Legal Pro and activate the license normally with the same key.
If the old site is already gone (e.g., deleted, or you’ve lost access), email support and we can manually free the activation on our end.
Getting support
Active licenses include priority email support. Email support@fasterthemes.com with:
- A description of the issue
- Your site URL
- Steps to reproduce, if it’s a bug
- Any error messages or screenshots
We aim for replies within eight business hours, and usually much faster. Please don’t open multiple tickets for the same issue — it slows things down for everyone.
